The Characters of Love synopsis
When the father she never knew turns up at her tenth birthday
party, the glamorous bearer of expensive gifts, Nell Dorney is
stunned. Nevertheless, his bid to win her friendship is a success
and soon Nell is living for their weekly meetings, their talk
of books and poetry, the trips to luxurious cafes and hotel tea
rooms which provide the settings for their reacquaintance.
A few years later as her father waltzes out of her life again,
the lessons in longing he has taught her help fuel a passionate
attachment to her university tutor, the poet and critic Bill Marnie.
When Nell's schoolgirlish obsession finally crosses the line between
fantasy and reality, the darkness of the scenes she is forced
to confront, send her reeling into a complete re-evaluation of
all the different meanings of love.
